Football Class of 1950 Immediately following World War II, Wagner College grew enormously. The athletic teams were filled with veterans and mature men. The athletic program was soaring. Chester Sellitto was a vital part of that era. He was a running back for Jim Lee Howell's great teams of the late 1940s. A punishing runner with total disregard for himself, Chester distinguished himself on the gridiron. During the homecoming game of 1949, he was selected as the first recipient of the Robb Memorial Trophy, presented to the outstanding player of the day. He also played in the secondary defense and was known as a fierce and punishing tackler. Chester also played guard on the basketball team. His aggressive style of play on the gridiron carried over onto the hardwood and successful seasons were the order of the day. Chester returned as an assistant basketball coach from 1966-73, finishing with an overall record of 97-89. Chester is retired and lives on Staten Island with his wife Patricia and three sons, Pete, Dean, and David. |
