Junior Billy Hoelck will be recording the events of the Wagner College women's water polo team at the 2007 NCAA Tournament for wagnerathletics.com with daily reports

Day 5/6 -- May 13/14

Last day of the tourney is coming to a close. I'm sitting on the airplane, ready to take off. I gotta write this fast, before they make us turn off all electronics. I don't want to have to stay awake until they give us the go ahead in like an hour. I'm too tired for that. Oh, and I also told the guy behind me in 22 D I'd give him a shout out. He gets the assist on the day- he passed the laptop from Gary in 23 F to me in 21 E. Thanks man.

So you probably know by now, we lost. It sucked big time. I don't even want to go through the details of the pre-game action. Because whatever we did prior to the loss doesn't really matter. What mattered was the game against Pomona-Pitzer, and we blew it.

The first quarter started and we came out flat. Those girls were absolutely nothing special, and we basically just went through the motions. Only there wasn't much motion. So really we just kind of went through.

Through to the second quarter where we played some more uninspired water polo.

The third quarter looked similar, until we made it to the fourth and realized, oh dang- for some of us, this might be the last time we ever play. For all of us, this is our chance to rally back and finally bring a W home to Wagner.

Well that mentality was too little too late. We started playing water polo well into the game, and lost it to Pomona Pitzer. Pomona Pitzer. I don't really have much else to say about the game. It was a bummer, and I'm extremely disappointed.

So they pulled away from the gate before I finished writing. But you wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't said something. Now I'm sitting curbside at JFK, waiting for our charter bus to pick us up. We've been waiting a while, I'm irritable and my toes are plump from the change in air pressure from the flight.

It's about seven in the morning; we took the red eye from LAX. I can't wait to get back to Staten so I can pass out for the majority of the day.

This will be the last time traveling, and playing for that matter with the senior class of 2007. Twins it's been real. Anne, I wish I was you . Tash you were the best roommate I ever had, and you really like stuff from Victoria's Secret. Katie, my lane one partner- I'll be your 1A any day of the week- I wouldn't have gotten through a number of morning practices if it wasn't for you. I'll miss you all and know I'll be seeing you in the future.

Girls who aren't graduating, round 3 at NCAAs next year. We'll get our W. Swim a lot this summer, you know I will. I'll see you all in August.

To the fans, thank you for reading. Maybe I'll publish my diary if I get enough interest. Let me know, I'll see what I can do.

Day 4 -- May 12

So we lost to LMU. I'm starting to think maybe the blog hinders Wagner teams who have them from winning. But probably not, because tomorrow we play Pomona-Pitzer and I promise I'm not getting out of the pool without a W. The school has never earned one at an NCAA championship and I am confident to speak for the girls and say we're gonna be the team to bring it back to Grymes Hill.

There was never a nail check yesterday before the game, and I'm just excited to get a manicure on Monday. My nails are the longest they've ever been- I haven't clipped them since we played Marist. Haha Marist. Sorry, anyway. Micro got called out at the quarter break to get her nails checked. I guess one of the girls on the other team said they'd been scratched. I ducked under when I heard that because I knew I must have been the culprit. Dodged that bullet for sure.

So day 2 of play is over. I didn't wake up early enough for breakfast, instead just headed to the pool. We got there like 25 minutes before we were actually allowed to get in, but it wasn't a big deal or anything, not like I could have used the extra half hour of sleep. Once given the green light we shot around like usual for about forty five minutes. Looked good, practiced a new trick play, had some fun with it then headed to Jamba Juice. I ordered mango a go-go with bananas. It was good, really big though, so Gary finished it for me. Waste not, want not I always say. We went back to the hotel, me and the shorties in my room went back to bed for a solid hour siesta, too bad Clueless was on TV and there's no way I could ever ignore that movie. I got in a fight with my best friend in fifth grade because one time we were watching it and I wouldn't stop quoting every line verbatim. It's tough trying to sleep when you know what Cher is going to say next, and you listen only to prove to yourself that you were right.

So we got up from bed and headed to the pool for game 2 vs LMU. My best friend from home was there- what's up Elise!! And while I'm at it, what's up to Anne's mom, Kaylee you sassy girl, you, Hobbs, the Tomlinsons- who I hear pay for the use of the internet at our hotel just so they can stay updated on the blog, Tash's family and all my other faithful followers. Yeah, I mean you too. I know you're reading this thinking "Hey, she didn't say my name specifically" but really it's just cause I didn't want to make the other fans jealous. You know you're my favorite reader. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you.

The sun was shining directly overhead as we started play of game 2. LMU scored early, but we rallied back keeping it interesting the first quarter. We ended the first down by two, but still feeling like we were in it. I guess that's when they pulled the carpet from under our feet. I know I got countered a bunch, and left Katie high and dry too many times. At the end of the half we were down 10-5 but looking for the comeback of the century. We lost sight of any hope after the third quarter when they outscored us 7-1. We won the fourth but by then it was too late. I was definitely disappointed with today's showing, because I know we are a better team than 20-10. Gotta put the loss behind us though and look to tomorrow.

Because I'm not going home without a W. No joke. I don't mind being seeded 8th. We got to open up against the best team in the country. Not second best- that alone made having the worst seed worth it. But even better than that is the opportunity to move up a place higher than we started. We're not just gonna finish where we came in and go home having lost nothing, we're gonna finish better than they put us at and put Wagner College on the map with a W.

I'd tell you how dinner went, but I wasn't there for it. I can tell you however, that the USC/UCLA game was phenomenal. For anyone who didn't have the pleasure of watching, it was truly inspirational. Those girls are nuts. The ball moves around the perimeter like 10 times during the duration of one shot clock. The goalies get out to their ankles and I have never seen more grabbing and wrestling in one game. It was an intense contest, and you should be bummed if you missed it.

I'm finally getting to bed relatively early tonight. Good thing because tomorrow's a big day. Let's go Wagner. See you out there!

P.S. - Happy 21st Birthday to Lindsey Rodgers, and so long to Andrew Schwartz and Pam who had to go back to Staten Island tonight.

Day 3 -- May 11

Day one of play is finally over. Stanford ended up being pretty solid. They swam fast, countered us a bunch and then scored on us even more. The final score was 25-8, and though that looks like a royal proverbial spanking - I had fun.

We woke up around 8ish for breakfast, and I'd never put fresh strawberries in my oatmeal before this trip, but it is amazing.

I went to my room for a quick nap then we met up and headed to the pool for a quick shoot around at 10. We split practice time with SDSU and just ran through a few drills. Of the past three days, today's practice was the best. Despite Phil Collins blaring over the speakers, a sad attempt at pump up jams, we were feeling better in the water and our shots were on. We ran through our 6 on 5 plays a few times smoothly. Thanks AO for taking it easy on us, those sun burns can be killer.

After practice we headed to Seal Beach for like the twentieth time this trip, I think Beemer has a crush on it. We had lunch at Ruby's Diner, at the end of the pier. It was seriously like a 20 mile trek to get there. Lunch was good though; I had a tuna melt and shared a chocolate milkshake. It was probably the best choice of pregame meals I could have chosen- second of course to AO's chicken fingers, chili fries, milkshake and salad probably for nutritional purposes.

After lunch we headed back to the hotel where I took nap number two of the day. We woke up at around 3ish and headed to the pool. I forgot my robe though, so we had to turn the car around to come back and pick it up. I got it and then we headed back to the pool for reals. We got on deck to find #3 USC taking it to #6 Hartwick. The final score was something like 20-5. I didn't feel bad though because we were gonna have to play #1 Stanford after. I didn't want to be the only team getting worked today.

We jumped in the pool early and began warm-up. I don't know why, but I didn't feel as nervous to play the #1 team this year as I did two years ago when we'd made it to the big dance. The same country song played three times in a row. I couldn't believe it. I'm told it was Garth Brooks but frankly I don't care who it was. It was inappropriate and made me angry. Who chooses country to work out to? Let alone warm up to at the NCAA tournament! What a joke. Luckily the DJ redeemed himself with back to back Steve Miller songs.

Wagner faithful were in full effect. Natasha's mama had her hair painted green. Anne's dad was vocal- and hilarious. Thanks to all the parents, friends and family for the support at the game, definitely put a couple smiles on my face.

The first quarter was intense. Alex had a good sprint- beat the Stanford chick to the ball, but her baby arms weren't enough reach to overcome the ogre. We were all on the defensive most of the quarter, but mostly just Katie. She had so many money blocks she should be a millionaire by now. I can't tell you how many one on nobody's she deflected, but it was up there. The moment she claimed my heart came with her sick 5 meter block. Packed. Seriously though, a 5 meter penalty is supposed to be a given goal for the shooter. They're expected to make those and Katie showed the #1 team in the nation what's up. Repeatedly. The unofficial MVP award of the day goes to my lane one partner, Katie Hauck.

We lost the first quarter 5-0 but rallied back in the second. Stacey had a hat trick on the day, the Cardinal couldn't contain her inside. Alex had a couple too- the best coming off of a trick play. It was beautiful. Student body right is a play I learned back in like the sixth grade. It's a joke, everyone knows what the play is and it usually only works on a bunch of middle schoolers. Well today it worked against Stanford. After they had scored one of their 25, we all set up at the right side of half tank. Katie started with the ball as we swam down toward the cage. Alex, the designated shooter ducked under water during the chaos of our strokes, submarined down to about 2 meters from the cage and popped up. Katie fed her the ball and Alex caught the goalie and their 6 field players by surprise. A hail Mary attempt, the success of student body right reminded me why I play this game. It's fun. The look on my teammates faces made me forget that we were losing by 20 goals, that we were getting swam up and down the pool, that I had missed 7 shots. We were having a good time. And we were scoring against the best team in the country.

The game ended in a flash of brilliance. On a feed from Natasha, Anne caught and shot at the buzzer. There was no possible way of ever making a comeback at that point, but the goal she scored may as well been a game winner because it felt that good. We got out of the pool losing 25-8 with smiles on our faces. Wagner College is tied for the third most goals put up against Stanford this season. (We also take first on the most goals they've scored against a team this season- minor detail).

Regardless it was fun. I may be relieved and happy it's over, but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. We showed up today with nothing to lose and walked away having gained a lot.

We hung out after the game to watch LMU play SDSU. San Diego ended up winning by one, a good game- which puts us in the Lion's den tomorrow. Wagner's played LMU twice- once at NCAAs two years ago, and once earlier this year. Each meeting we inch closer in getting the W and all I know is third time's a charm.

Dinner was at Acapulco- not a bad Mexican chain. On Andrew's suggestion, I had a "Virgin Margo". It was kinda sour, but whatever. Chips and salsa were clutch, my Carne Asada y Camarones were solid as well and the flan sealed the deal. I'm tired and we have practice early before we play tomorrow. Sweeeet dreams!

Day 2 -- May 10

Day two is coming to a close. I just want to start this one off with a moment of clarification. Turns out Patrick Beemer has officially protested last night's call of who won the race back to the hotel. We heard from an impartial judge (Alex's little brother Joey all the way in Pennsylvania) early this morning and after reviewing the film, he's decided that the ruling on the field stands. Our van won. End of debate.

We woke up pretty early this morning, our bodies still on east coast time. Round one of breakfast was alright- no Chartwells, that's for sure. But round two was stellar. Yvette's mama made us authentic breakfast burritos- pollo, chorrizo and bean and cheese. Felt good to eat real mexican. After breakfast I went back to bed, because in New York it would be around noon, definitely time for a nap. The rest of the team took advantage of the Golden State's sunshine and layed out by the pool.

We headed to the pool around twelvish for another walk through practice. When we got on deck we were showered with presents. Clearly the hosts at Long Beach State were ecstatic to have us here. They couldn't help treating us like celebrities. We received black Speedo backpacks embroidered with the NCAA decal and inside were tampons and a squishy pillow with the same logo.

Pretty stoked with the goodies we jumped in the pool feeling much better than yesterday. With the long flight out of our systems and no lunch weighing us down we were moving much swifter. Today we only had an hour to play around so we moved through drills pretty quickly. As we wrapped up practice, Stanford, our competition arrived. Those girls are tan.

We left the pool and headed for lunch. I got a mango iced tea drink thing from the coffee bean. It was pretty good. Some of the girls were kinda bummed cause we had a trip to the beach planned, but it just wasn't feasible to get there, hang out and get to the banquet all in a few hours. So Beemer made the executive decision and the girls made due with the Marriot poolside. I took another nap. After putting in a couple more good hours in the sun everyone started getting ready for the big night. We had our NCAA banquet to attend at the Long Beach Yacht Club. The venue was nice. We got there and were greeted with more goodies. Little make-up bags with nail polish, chapstick, eyeshadow and more!

Anyway, we didn't feel so bad in our dresses; everyone had gnarly tanlines and HUGE shoulders.

The guest speaker of the night was Olympian, and pioneer for women's water polo- Maureen O'Toole. She was seriously inspirational. She talked about her trip to the Olympics, where women's water polo had its debut. It was great to hear her talk about her accomplishments. At the age of thirty nine she competed with and against girls half her age and flew back to the US from Sydney with a silver medal. Pretty sick.

Dinner was pretty scrumptious. I had a nice little salad, some stuffing, fruit, cheese tortellinis and a roll. The roll was good enough to headline. Hard on the outside but not so hard that you looked like less of a lady when you ate it. Soft and warm in the middle, the butter melted on contact. The line to dessert was nuts but worth the wait. There was a plethora to choose from, but only 9 sugar cookies. Each colored like a polo ball with a team's name on it. Katie had already taken the only Wagner one, and though USC and UCLA remained, I thought it was best to leave theirs be, and take the initiative to snag the generic "NCAA" one. Nice move on my part.

The NCAA put together a compilation video of all the teams in attendance. It was incredible to be featured on the same screen as some of the best competitors in the country.

We finished up the banquet with individual speeches from a representative from each team. Natasha was first up and she put Wagner on the map. Referencing MTV's True Life: I'm a Staten Island Girl, she let the west coast teams know what it really meant to be a Stat rat.

The banquet closed nicely. We went back to the hotel. And that brings me to now. With quite possibly the most challenging game of my life less than 24 hours away I'm excited. I know the girls are all anxious to jump in tomorrow and play the best of the best, and I just feel lucky to be here with them. We're playing in a National Championship against the best girls in the United States. Win or lose, I'm just happy to be here. But don't get it twisted- I'm not going back to NY without a W.

Day 1--May 9

So we arrived at LAX (airport) around 10 am pacific standard time and Greg 'Gary' Mescall presented me with the opportunity to write a blog, a diary of sorts, to portray the events of the tourney to our friends and family at home. I happily obliged- mainly because Ian Gallagher of the men's lacrosse team has one, so I wanted one too. Sorry about my run on sentences, I'm excited.

The journey to claim a national title began early this morning. After the majority of the team pulled an all nighter, we met at the oval around 4:30 and piled into an Academy bus. That's right, no 15 passenger white vans for us, this time we were riding in style. We had an actual chauffeur take us to the United Airlines terminal at JFK.

Oscar winner Cate Blanchett was on our flight (See Babel, The Aviator, LTOR and more). That was kind of exciting. I give Camille the assist as she was the one who identified her first. She warned me of what Ms. Blanchett was wearing so that I could recognize her once we boarded. I walked through the first class section and saw Blanchett dressed elegantly in black. I stared. And her man friend sitting next to me totally saw. Oh well, she's famous, I had no shame.

After the awe escaped me I found my seat in 19F and put my pillow against the window. No one sat in the middle seat, but it made no difference to me. I passed out before we even taxied away from the gate and didn't wake up until we prepared for our final descent into LAX. It was the shortest 6 hour flight I'd ever taken.

Once on the ground we got our luggage and headed to the hotel. We're staying at the Courtyard Marriot, for the third time this year. And it turns out they all have the same design on the comforters.

We dropped everything off and headed to lunch. Half hit up the "Mexican" food at Baja Fresh (Rubios is so much better) and the rest of us went to Red Robin (where we celebrated the birthday of Andrew Schwartz).

In a comatose from lunch we headed to the pool for a walk through practice. Immediately after walking on deck Gary was called out and told that he'd better put sunscreen on. It was obvious we've been playing in an indoor pool all season. On Friday, we are going to play Stanford, the number one team in the country. Luckily, today we shared the pool and practice time with the USA national team so the Cardinal is no longer as intimidating.

Full from lunch and stiff from a long plane ride we didn't look as sharp as usual. We have a couple days to work it out of our system and by Friday game faces will be on and we'll be ready to do what we came to southern California to do.

After practice we headed to Seal Beach. Alex, Anne, Yvette, Gary and Coach ran around playing Frisbee while Amber stared in awe at the pacific and Mirco got her first official, non machine induced tan of the season. It was glorious.

Dinner time was approaching so we left the beach and headed to Anne's aunt's house. This is the third time I've had the pleasure of visiting their Anaheim Hills estate, and every time is a delicious as the previous. Her grandpa is notorious for his succulent Tri tip sandwiches (and for those of you on the East Coast who've never heard of tri tip, it's a bomb.com/flanksteak like meat). At dinner entertainment was in full effect. Gary read to us his sequel poem to Wagner Water Polo 2007. If you haven't heard the first one, I recommend it. The second is equally as amazing. The nights festivities were wrapped up with Schwartz dropping his rendition of Rapper's Delight with Amber bringin it home "Say Whaaaat?".

Tired and in desperate need of a good night's sleep we all loaded into our 3 mini vans and raced back to the hotel. Literally. Beemer's van started with the unfair advantage out of the driveway, followed by Schwartz who never stood a chance. Bringing up the rear was my van, driven by Sara Leadfoot Kramer. We maneuvered the lead a couple miles into the 91 heading west and thought we lost Beemer a safe distance back. Socal native, Yvette suggested we seal the deal with a sneaky shortcut right through town. We went with her instincts and exited the freeway.

As we pulled up to the first light our van was shocked. Beemer, also native to the area, had the same idea! He was just as surprised to see us, and once again, the race was on. One light before our final turn my van slipped in front. The home stretch was ours. Just as we were about to turn, we look in the mirrors and Beemer had made a hasty decision- he pulled into a driveway leading to the backside of the hotel. Typical. We peeled out around the corners, slipped into a parking space and bolted out of the car. Certain we'd won we walked briskly and proud into the hotel only to find...CHEATERS! They had pulled up to the back of the hotel, parked illegally, sprinted into the lobby and took a seat as if they'd been sitting there for hours, waiting for us. Unfortunately for Beemer's van, they had already been DQed for they had not parked in a legitimate space. We won, fair and square.

Day one is coming to a close. Although our first game is not until Friday evening (against Stanford, stay tuned), there are six elite women shutting their eyes with a win already under their belts. Congratulations Sara Kramer, Janelle the Athletic Trainer, Seniors Katie, Anne, my buddy Yvette and of course, me. No matter what happens this weekend, we are already champions. Good night Staten Island, wish you were here.
